Plans for a community center in Oakhurst were conceived in the early 1960’s when members of the mountain area felt the need for a place where the area citizens could gather for dinners, meetings, and other social activities. The land for the Center was generously donated by a long-time area resident, and the Center, finished in 1965, was built primarily with volunteer labor and donated materials. The Center continues to operate with a volunteer Board of Directors made up mostly of members of community-based organizations and service clubs. A part-time facility coordinator lives on site and responds promptly to the many requests from those who wish to use the facility.
Regular users of the Community Center facilities include Jazzercize classes which meet several times per week; Christ Community Bible Church, Weight Watchers, and Gold Dust Dancers Square and Line Dance Club who all meet weekly. In addition, Mountain Community Women hold monthly meetings and special events; the Kiwanis club holds bi-monthly Pancake Breakfasts and sponsors a car show in the fall; the Rotary Clubs use both the Main Hall and Pavilion for their Crab and Cajun Feeds every spring; Soroptomists hold an annual St. Patrick’s Day Soup & Salad Luncheon and a fall Hobo Stew Night; the Service Organization of the Sierra sponsors a Bingo Night and also a November Luncheon; and the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce hosts special events during the year. A new and growing event for the Center is the Woodcarver’s Rendezvous occupying both buildings for a full week each spring. One of the biggest events held at the Center is the Annual Ribfest each summer sponsored by the entire Community Center Board as a fund- raiser for the Center.
In addition to the regular users, weddings and receptions, birthday parties, family reunions, memorial services, youth events, seminars and training sessions, etc., combine to make the Community Center a popular and well used facility.
The Facility Coordinator would be pleased to show our facilities and discuss user fees with you. Early reservations assure best possible scheduling of your event. For information, call (559) 683-2290.
